Germany: General Moelders, fighter ace (115 victories), killed in air accident near Breslau (Silesia); aged 30.

Eastern Front

Operation Barbarossa: German troops capture Rostov-on-Don (recaptured by Russians, November 28).

Sea War

Atlantic: German disguised raider Atlantis intercepted by cruiser HMS Devonshire off Ascension Island and scuttled by her crew. Atlantis has been at sea for 622 days, sinking 22 merchant ships totalling 146,000 t.
