African Fronts

East Africa: Deventer’s South African Mounted Brigade (1,200 men with 8 guns) begins 150-mile surprise advance from Arusha on Kondoa Irangi in heaviest rainy season for years.

Western Front

Flanders: British success at St Eloi.
Verdun: Germans driven from north edge of Caillette Wood and west part of Vaux (city of Verdun) by Mangin’s newly arrived 5th Division.

Eastern Front

Baltic Provinces: Germans repulsed at Üxküll bridgehead (Dvina), repulsed near Dvinsk on April 12.

Southern Fronts

Greece: Government refuses Serb Army land route from Corfu to Salonika.

Air War

Britain – German airships make 5 minor raids on provincial England: 11 Navy, 5 Army sorties. LZ97 (Linnarz) bombs Ongar-Barkingside (nights April 3-4, 5-6, 24-25, 25-26 and 26-27, total casualties 12).

Politics

Bulgaria informs Greece that troops ordered to withdraw over frontier (closed save to mails, April 9).
Greece refuses Serb Army land route from Corfu to Salonika.
