The first victim of convoy Pedestal is aircraft carrier ‘Eagle’. Torpedoed by ‘U-73’ she capsize and sinks in minutes.

Sea War

Mediterranean: Carrier Eagle sunk by U-boat U-73 north of Algiers (260 killed).
Pacific: Japanese Combined Fleet leaves home waters for Truk (Caroline Islands) to counter US landings on Guadalcanal.

Air War

Germany: Destructive RAF night raid on Mainz (repeated August 12-13); Cathedral destroyed.
