Pacific: US F4F Wildcat fighters and Dauntless dive-bombers flown into Henderson Field (Guadalcanal), called the ‘Cactus Air Force’.
Eastern Front: Squadron-Leader Stephen Horthy, Vice-Regent of Hungary, killed in action over South Russian Front; aged 38.
