Sea War

Pacific: Carrier Saratoga torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-26 in Solomons.
Merchant shipping losses in August 1942: 106 Allied ships with 543,920 tons in Atlantic, 17 Allied ships with 117,213 tons elsewhere.
13 Axis ships with 72,420 tons in Mediterranean, 23 Japanese ships with 114,281 tons in Pacific.
9 German U-boats sunk in the Atlantic, Arctic or Baltic (worldwide total of 11 losses), 21 new U-boats operational, 344 U-boats of all types total in service.

Secret War

Germany: Gestapo smash Rote Kapelle (‘Red Orchestra’) – major Soviet spy ring inside the Reich; many arrests during August.

Home Fronts

Britain: Royal Ulster Constabulary seize 2 large caches of sub-machine guns and ammunition and make 90 arrests in Belfast (August 31-September 5), following discovery of IRA plan to attack British and American troops in Northern Ireland.
