Sea War

Mediterranean – severe British naval losses (night December 18-19): ‘Force K‘ runs into minefield off Tripoli – cruiser Neptune and destroyer Kandahar sink (1 survivor on Neptune); 2 other cruisers damaged, 3 ‘human torpedo’ crews penetrate Alexandria Harbour and sink battleships Queen Elizabeth and Valiant (they are subsequently raised and repaired after many months).

China

Hong Kong: Japanese troops land on Hong Kong Island (night December 18-19).
