Captain Albert Ball became the first British pilot to be nationally acclaimed on account of his mounting score of air victories (44 until his death in May 1917).

Persia: Anglo-Bakhtiari agreement for oilfield protection.

USA: Senator Root attacks foreign policy but Republicans promise support for anti-U-boat policy. Government announces merchant ships’ right to arm for self-defence. USNA cadet intake increased.

Home Fronts

Britain: Asquith Commons speech, increased taxation necessary; Kitchener in Lords on Mesopotamia.
