Pacific – AMERICANS LAND ON IWO JIMA (Operation Detachment): 4th and 5th Marine divisions employed. Sergeant John Basilone, first enlisted US marine to receive Medal of Honor (1943), killed on Iwo Jima; aged 26.

Russian Front

East Prussia: German garrison of Königsberg launches desperate counterattack.

Western Front

Scottish troops of Canadian 1st Army enter Goch.
