Home Fronts

Germany: GUDERIAN APPOINTED ‘INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF ARMOURED TROOPS’, responsible directly to Hitler and with wide-ranging powers to re-equip, re-train and re-vitalize the decimated Panzer force and ‘make that arm of Service into a decisive weapon for winning the war.’

Air War

Western Europe: 1,000 t bombs dropped on St Nazaire U-boat base by 400 RAF night bombers.

Secret War

NORSK HYDRO RAID: 9 Norwegian paratroopers, led by Lieutenant Haugen, blow up 286 heavy water cells thereby depriving Nazis of raw materials for atomic weapon research (Haugen escapes to Sweden).

Sea War

Merchant shipping losses in February 1943: 52 Allied ships with 315,206 tons in Atlantic, 21 Allied ships with 87,856 tons elsewhere.
26 Axis ships with 96,257 tons in Mediterranean, 21 Japanese ships with 92,662 tons in Pacific.
15 German U-boats sunk in the Atlantic, Arctic or Baltic (worldwide total of 22 losses), 22 new U-boats operational, 407 U-boats of all types total in service.
