Montenegro: Montenegrins repulse Austrian attack at Grahovo.

Western Front

Haig discovers King has lost confidence in Field Marshal French (Monarch tells CoS Robertson that he should be replaced).
Flanders: Belgians repulse attack along Yser Canal.
Artois: French storm some trenches south of Souchez. German attacks there repelled on July 18.

African Fronts

East Africa – Action at Mbuyuni Hill (10 miles (ca. 16 km) east of Taveta): Brig­ade General Malleson’s 1,223 British soldiers (211 casualties) bungle attack on 714 Germans (35 casualties) and retreat.

Britain: National Registra­tion Act for citizens 15-65 years old.
Dominion Prime Minister (Borden of Canada) first attends Cabinet.
