Pacific

Marianas: 3,000-strong rearguard of Saipan garrison storms US positions (night July 7-8) – before suffering annihilation. General Saito and Admiral Nagumo commit hara-kiri.

Eastern Front

Northern sector: North of Lake Ladoga, Finns complete retreat to the ‘U’-Line.

Air War

Western Europe: 450 Avro Lancaster and Handley Page Halifax bombers saturate German defenses near Caen with 2,300t bombs (night July 7-8).

Occupied Territories

Denmark: Danish mechanic with no pilot training steals He 111 and flies it to Sweden (shot down by Swedish AA-guns).
