M4A3 Shermans on Okinawa
These M4A3 Shermans on Okinawa have had their large white stars painted over in black to prevent them from being used as aim points. Even the Japanese 47-mm-Model 1 anti-tank gun from 1941, while of moderate performance when compared to similar contemporary weapons, was effective against Shermans.
Diary for Wednesday, June 13, 1945:

Okinawa

End of organized Japanese resistance in Oroku sector. Farther south, heavy Japanese gunfire forces Americans to use tanks for all normal MT duties in Kunishi Ridge sector.
