Air War

Eastern Front: Elite German fighter wing JG 51 shoots down 100 Russian bombers attacking Guderian’s Panzers east of Minsk. The commander, Moelders, personally destroys 5 bombers. First air raid alert in Moscow (false alarm).
Germany: RAF daylight raids on Bremen and Kiel; Halifax bombers participate in the Kiel raid.

Eastern Front

Operation Barbarossa: Germans complete encirclement of large Russian forces in Bialystok ‘pocket’.

Sea War

Mediterranean: British sub Torbay sinks 2 merchant ships, 6 sailing vessels and Italian submarine Jantina (June 30 – July 5).

Neutrals

Vichy France: Government breaks off diplomatic relations with Russia.

Sea War

Merchant shipping losses in June 1941: 104 Allied ships with 415,255 tons in Atlantic, 5 Allied ship with 16,770 tons elsewhere.
