Cassino town after 500 Allied bombers flattered it.
WW2 War Diary for Wednesday, March 15, 1944:

Air War

Mediterranean: Europe: Allied bombers obliterate Cassino town, dropping 1,107 t. bombs.
Germany: 1,000 RAF 4-engined bombers raid Stuttgart, dropping 3,000 t of bombs through dense cloud; many combats with night fighters. Diversionary raids on Munich, targets in Northwest Germany and Amiens (40 bombers lost in all operations).

Mediterraean

Italy: Massive 5 1/2-hour artillery barrage at Cassino. Indian and NZ infantry and tanks begin reoccupying shattered town; ‘Castle Hill’, near ‘Monastery Hill’ also captured.

Eastern Front

Southern Sector: 2nd Ukrainian Front reaches river Bug near Uman.
