General Douglas MacArthur
General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964). Dubbed the ‘American Caesar’ by a recent biographer, MacArthur was legend in his own lifetime. After an early career of unsurpassed achievement he won undying fame by defeating the Japanese in WW2 and then bringing them all the benefits of Western democracy. The invincible old warrior and peacemaker then succumbed to the temptation of total power and was forced to retire.

Australia: MacArthur appointed Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Southwest Pacific. MacArthur promises (in Adelaide, March 20) ‘I shall return’ to Philippines. Major-General Wainwright to command all US-Filipino forces in Philippines.
