Western Front

Aisne: General Kluck severely wounded in leg by French shell, visiting trenches near Vailly, aged 68; Fabeck replaces him in command of German First Army.

Eastern Front

Carpathians: German Beskiden-Korps formed to bolster Austrians.

Sea War

Irish Sea: British liner Falaba sunk by U28 in 8 minutes (104 lost including Americans).
Black Sea: 5 Russian battleships, 2 cruisers and 10 destroyers shell Bosphorus forts but fog next day thwarts renewal.
North Sea: Captain Fryatt of British ferry Brussels rams U33; he receives Admiralty thanks.
Palestine­: French cruiser D’Entrecasteaux bombards Gaza.
