GERMAN AIRBORNE INVASION OF CRETE (Operation Merkur = ‘Mercury’): 490 Ju 52 transports take off from primitive strips near Athens, towing 100 DFS gliders and land 6,000 paratroops and airborne infantry on and around Maleme airfield; bombers pound New Zealand troop positions at Maleme.

Sea War

Atlantic: 4 Italian submarines arrive at Bordeaux on Bay of Biscay (May 7-20) from Massawa (Red Sea), which they had left in early March.
