World War One Diary for Wednesday, May 22, 1918:

Air War

Western Front: Canadian ace Bishop returns, as Commander of No 85 Squadron (SE5s, with 3 American pilots), scores 27 more victories until June 19.
France: Single German Gotha bomber of 30 sent bombs Paris (and on May 23). 72 bombs cause 23 casualties.
Germany: 11 F.E.2s and 5 Handley Page bombers attack Kreuzwald electric power station.

Africa

Mozambique – ‘ Action of Korewa (24 miles south of Nanungu): Pamforce and NRFF King’s African Rifles just fail to trap Captain Kohl in rocky hills, but take most of his baggage (60 casualties including 11 Germans, 67 shells and 70,000 bullets).
Belgian Congo­: Katanga Railway (Bukama­ – Cape Town) completed.

Sea War

North Sea: British air raid sinks German destroyer in Zeebrugge (lock gates bombed on May 2).
