Chinese infantry from Yunnan watch shelling on the central front. All are dressed in light-coloured cotton uniforms and have improved backpacks, with doubled blanket rolls surrounded by a waterproof sheet.

Far East

China: Chinese troops recapture Yuyangkwan, east of Ichang.

Air War

Germany – Wuppertal Raid: 719 RAF bombers (33 lost) despatched; approx. 475 find target, dropping 1,900 t of bombs. Huge fires kill 2,450 people and halt industrial production. Local anti-aircraft guns taken by surprise.
