Air War

Britain – ‘Baedeker’ Raid on Exeter: 90 aircraft (7 lost) start conflagration in city centre. Cathedral and 9 churches wrecked; firemen and ARP personnel machine-gunned in bright moonlight. 2 He 111 bombers, taking off from northern French airfield shot down by Sqn.-Ldr. Maclachlan, one-armed fighter pilot.
Western Europa: RAF night raids on Hamburg, St Nazaire U-boat base and Kristiansand airfield (Norway). 5 bombers lost.

Occupied Territories

Denmark: Death of Thorvald Stauning Prime Minister of Denmark, 1929-42; aged 68.
