A destroyer rescues survivors of the US carrier ‘Hornet’ after the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands. Later ‘Hornet’ was sunk by Japanese destroyers.

Pacific: BATTLE OF SANTA CRUZ ISLANDS. Japanese carriers approach Guadalcanal in anticipation of the capture of Henderson Field and sink US carrier Hornet; Japanese cruiser Yura lost.

Air War

Pacific: US bombers raid Hong Kong power station and airfield at Canton.
