Fire-ready gun of a German submarine. Unpleasant encounters with armed merchant ships, escorts and Q-ships traps force the submarine commanders more and more to underwater attack with torpedoes.

Sea War

Aegean: U-boat torpedoes Greek volunteer transport Angeliki.
North Sea: 2 RNAS seaplanes reconnaissance Schillig Roads from carrier Vindex but fail to find boom; no CMB attack carried out.
Britain: Jellicoe warns of ‘…serious danger that our losses in merchant ships … may by the early summer of 1917 have such a serious effect … as to force us into accepting peace terms’.

Battle of the Somme: Allies capture Dewdrop and Hazy trenches.
