Sea War

Black Sea: 3 Russian destroyers sunk by Stukas. Stalin imposes strict curbs on subsequent operations by Black Sea Fleet.
Pacific: Americans land on Kolombangara Island. Battle of Vella Lavella (October 6-7): Japanese win their last night victory in Solomons – torpedoing 2 US destroyers; Japanese destroyer Yugumo sunk. Meanwhile, small craft evacuate Japanese garrison from Vella Lavella.
