Diary for Thursday, September 11, 1941:

Eastern Front

Operation Barbarossa, Siege of Leningrad: General Zhukov replaces Voroshilov as Leningrad Defence Commander – he immediately rouses the dispirited garrison to greater efforts and organizes the erection of many new strong points and barricades.

Sea War

Atlantic: Roosevelt orders US Navy to ‘shoot on sight’ in US-protected waters. This was the beginning of the ‘undeclared war’ between U.S.A. and Germany.

Occupied Territories

Belgium: King Leopold III of Belgium marries Mlle. Marie Lilian Baels (his first wife, Queen Astrid, having died in 1935). Mlle. Baels refuses the title of Queen and is to be known as Princess de Rethy.
