Pacific: US carrier Wasp sunk by Japanese submarine I-19, south of Guadalcanal; new battleship North Carolina damaged by torpedo.

Eastern Front

Stalingrad: Rodimtsev Division ordered to ‘clear’ Germans from strategic important Mamai Hill and railway station in city centre (latter changes hands several times).
