Germany: 295 Avro Lancaster bombers raid Berlin (20 lost, 906t bombs dropped).

Germany: One million women and children leave Berlin during or soon after the 3 big RAF raids of late August – early September.

Sea War

Mediterranean – INVASION OF CALABRIA (South Italy): 13th Corps (British 8th Army) crosses from Sicily to Reggio di Calabria preceded by 900-gun barrage (Operation Baytown).

Politics

Italy: Allied-Italian Armistice Terms signed secretly at Cassibile in Sicily (not made public till September 8).
