A conscripted elementary school teacher from Strasbourg issued German lessons to local children in an occupied French border region.

Western Front

Aisne: French Sixth Army withdrawing under pressure from Hills 130 and 159. Venizel bridge retained; all others lost.

Eastern Front

East Prussia: Russians take several villages near Rosog.

African Fronts

East Africa: German surprise attack on Yasini repulsed.

Sea War

Baltic: Russian cruisers Bogatyr and Oleg lay 100 mines east of Bornholm Island (east point of Denmark).

Home Fronts

Britain: Letter to The Times starts Armenian Red Cross and Refugee Fund.
