Home Fronts

Germany: Deutscher Volkssturm established (equivalent to British Home Guard). Himmler speaks at first parade and calls on every German to resist impending invasion by guerrilla tactics. They must fight ‘like werewolves … Every house, every ditch … every cluster of trees will have to be defended.’
Greece: Government returns to Athens.

Eastern Front

Russians now hold 5 Carpathian passes on eastern borders of Slovakia.

Burma

Lieutenant-General ‘Vinegar Joe’ Stilwell, Deputy Allied Supreme Commander Southeast Asia, recalled to Washington.
