A French firing squad executes a German PoW. Such happenings soon passed when trench warfare commenced.

Western Front

Marne: ALLIED PURSUIT CONTIN­UES TO THE RIVER AISNE. Foch reaches Chalons-sur­-Marne and Maunoury Com­piegne. Joffre cables Government in Bordeaux ‘The Battle of the Marne is an incontestable victory for us’
Vosges­: French XIV Corps reoccupied St Die.

Eastern Front

Galicia: Brusilov closes in on Grodek. Conrad orders general Austrian retreat in pouring rain at 1730 hours behind river San after Auffenberg extricates Fourth Army thanks to radio intercepts. He also moves a brigade by motor vehicles, but is soon replaced by Archduke Joseph Ferdinand.

Southern Fronts

Hungary: Austrians entrenched behind Roman Canal in Syrmia. Serbs have penetrated 20 miles (ca. 32 km).
Bosnia: Montenegrins break through at Foca to make deep raids.

Sea War

German New Guinea: c. 600 Australians land unopposed, but skirmishes inland.

Secret War

Western Front: French present BEF Intelligence with first 15 homing pigeons.

Home Fronts

Britain: Churchill speaks at all-Party ‘Call to Arms’ (London) but Tory Irish Home Rule row stops him speaking at Birmingham on September 14.
