Canadians occupy Dieppe, which is abandoned by the Germans. British troops reach Arras; USA soldiers capture Verdun.
Montgomery promoted to Field Marshal.

Italy

British 8th Army captures Monte Gridolfo, a bastion of the Gothic Line.
