Mediterranean – ANZIO LANDINGS: Allied 6th Corps lands near Anzio and Nettuno, south of Rome (Operation Shingle) in bold attempt to outflank Germans at Cassino. Landing craft equipped with rocket launchers deluge the weak defences.
